For an Altrincham business that depends on online systems, Starlink can be considered as a second internet route. A second dish or modem alone does not deliver automatic failover: the existing network needs to know when and how to use it.
Bring your IT provider into the plan
Identify who manages the router, firewall, Wi-Fi and business applications. Ask them to confirm how a second WAN connection would be connected and configured, and which Starlink hardware and service are suitable for the requirements. Installation and IT responsibilities should be clear before equipment is ordered.
List services that depend on remote access, fixed addressing or supplier-controlled connections. Compatibility should be checked individually. Avoid assuming a new internet service can reproduce every feature of an existing business circuit without changes.
Decide what should stay online
During an outage, payment systems, email and essential calls may take priority over large backups or guest streaming. Suitable network equipment can apply policies, but those policies need agreeing with the business. They are not created just by connecting Starlink.
Check shared points of failure
Both connections may still depend on the same router, switch or mains supply. Discuss whether suitable backup power and spare equipment are needed. A second provider reduces some risks; it does not remove every possible cause of an outage.
Test switching and recovery
Arrange a controlled test at a convenient time. Confirm that the network switches to the backup, that essential applications reconnect, and that it returns to the preferred connection as intended. Existing calls or sessions can be interrupted when the route changes, so demonstrate the actual behaviour to staff.
Record who to contact if either service fails and how staff can recognise which connection is active. This makes the backup useful during a real incident, when the person who commissioned it may be unavailable.
