Starlink in Formby: Checking Trees Before Installation

Considering Starlink near trees in Formby? Learn how to compare mounting positions, allow for growth and distinguish sky obstructions from weak indoor Wi-Fi.

Starlink dish installed by SpaceTek UK in Formby

At a tree-lined Formby property, the question is not simply whether you can see some sky from the garden. Starlink communicates with satellites moving through the area of sky required by the dish. A canopy that cuts into that view can cause interruptions even when a quick speed test looks promising.

Check the proposed position with the app

Use Starlink’s obstruction-checking tool from a safely accessible candidate location and save the result. Compare more than one sensible position. A check from the middle of the garden does not establish what the dish will see beside an upstairs wall.

For elevated positions, ask the installer to assess the view and access. Do not climb a ladder or roof simply to obtain a phone scan. Starlink’s official obstruction guidance explains what the app is checking.

Allow for change over time

Consider growth and the fuller canopy of deciduous trees in leaf. A route that looks clear in winter may be less suitable later. Do not base the installation on an assumption that a neighbour’s trees can be cut back, or that trees on your own land can be altered without checking relevant restrictions.

Would a taller pole solve it?

Extra height may improve one obstruction and do little for another. It also changes the load on the mount and the access needed to service it. Compare an alternative building position before assuming a taller assembly is the answer. The chosen support must suit the structure and exposure.

Diagnose interruptions in the right place

Once installed, review the dish’s obstruction information as it builds up during use. If problems occur only in one room, compare indoor Wi-Fi coverage as well. These are different faults and need different remedies.

For weather exposure, read the separate coastal mounting guide. To assess a Formby site, send photographs showing the trees and possible mounting positions.
