On a Mobberley property with several buildings, the best position for a Starlink dish may not be beside the main house. Start by mapping where the connection is needed, then choose both the satellite location and the links that will carry internet around the site.
Give every building a purpose
A workshop used for occasional browsing has different requirements from an office hosting daily calls. List the users and devices in each building, and identify any cameras or specialist equipment with particular network needs. Avoid paying to cover areas that do not need service.
Compare wired and wireless routes
A protected wired route can provide a dependable link, but the design must account for distance, ground works and electrical considerations between separate buildings. Fibre may be appropriate in some layouts. This should be specified as a complete route, including its termination and protection, rather than as an arbitrary length of outdoor cable.
A point-to-point wireless link can avoid a trench when a suitable path and mounting locations are available. Trees, structures and changes to the site can affect that path. It also requires power and compatible equipment; it is different from trying to reach a distant barn using the house router’s Wi-Fi.
Put Wi-Fi inside the destination building
Once the network reaches an outbuilding, an access point may be needed to serve devices inside. Metal cladding and thick walls can prevent an external signal from reaching a desk even when the building-to-building link is working correctly. Test both stages separately.

- The chosen linking method, equipment and power requirements.
- Any trenching, ducting or access work and who will provide it.
- Commissioning tests at each required location and the support arrangements afterwards.
