Farms and rural businesses are where Starlink earns its keep: long lanes that fibre has not reached, copper lines that drop in the rain, and work that increasingly depends on a connection, from livestock records and online sales to cameras and card payments. The dish is the easy part. The planning is about getting the connection from the dish to every building that needs it.
Where the dish goes
On a farm the best position is rarely the house wall nearest the router. A barn gable or a short pole on an outbuilding often gives the clearest horizon, well away from trees and the farmhouse roof. Exposure matters more than height: a lower, well-braced mount survives winter better than the highest point on the site. The Clitheroe stone-property installation and Malpas wall-mount project show two rural mounting arrangements.
Reaching barns, offices and outbuildings
- Cabled links. A Cat 6 Ethernet run reaches up to 100 metres per segment and is the most reliable way to connect an office or a second building. Routes are planned for tractors, livestock and weather.
- Wireless bridges. Where a cable is impractical, a point-to-point wireless link between two buildings carries the connection across a yard or field with a clear line of sight.
- Wi-Fi where you work. Outdoor-rated access points cover yards, parlours and workshops; mesh units cover the house. One router by the dish will not do it.
Residential or business plan?
Many farms run happily on a Residential plan. Starlink also sells business plans with priority data for sites where the connection is critical; the current UK options and prices are on Starlink’s business page. The hardware and the installation are the same either way, so the decision can be made after the dish is in.
Keeping the connection up
- A 4G or 5G router as automatic failover for payments and cameras.
- A small UPS so the dish and router ride through short power cuts.
- A cable route that can be inspected, and a mount that can be reached safely for cleaning or replacement.
- Starlink hardware you already own can be installed, moved or tidied up; it does not have to be bought through the installer.
