Measure the gap and record what lies between

Note the distance from the house to the office, any trees or structures in between, and where power is available. Photograph both ends from ground level. Also identify existing ducts or cable routes; do not assume an old outdoor cable is suitable or safe to reuse.

Compare the three main approaches

• A designed wired link: useful where a protected route is practical. Cable type, distance, outdoor exposure and electrical separation between buildings need assessment.
• A point-to-point wireless link: can bridge a gap when suitable mounting points and an appropriate clear path are available. It still needs equipment and power at the relevant ends.
• A Wi-Fi extension: may suit a short, favourable layout, but walls, glazing and vegetation can make it less predictable.

For a desk used every day, ask how the proposed option will perform at the desk with the office doors closed. A good reading outside the building is not the same as a usable working connection indoors.

Could the dish go on the office instead?

Possibly, if that building provides the better obstruction-free view and a suitable mounting structure. The link back to the house must then be included in the design. Decide where the main equipment will live and how it will be powered before choosing which building hosts the dish.
